The Story Behind the Stories

Gregory Stark is a dark fantasy and horror writer from Crown Point, Indiana, in Northwest Indiana. Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, he has spent a lifetime drawn to stories that unsettle, transport, and stay with the reader long after the final page.

After a long career in sales, Gregory returns to the creative interests that have been with him since childhood: writing, reading, and losing himself in a compelling world. His influences reach beyond novels to comics, anime, and video games—any medium capable of building a story worth inhabiting.

The Counterwritten: The Shroud of Crown Point is his first published novel and the opening book of the Oneirion Trilogy, a dark fantasy series about shadow, memory, and the dangerous power of choice.

What Draws Me to a Story

I’m drawn to stories rooted in a distinct sense of place—places that hold history, atmosphere, and the quiet pressures that shape the people who live there. A town, a room, a landscape, or a familiar street can carry as much meaning as any character.

Memory gives a story its depth. I’m interested in the way people remember differently: what they preserve, what they reshape, and what continues to echo long after an event has passed. Those traces often reveal more than a straightforward account ever could.

MEMORY

I’m equally drawn to what remains unspoken: the unanswered question, the hidden connection, the choice not yet made. The unwritten leaves room for mystery, imagination, and discovery—inviting readers to meet a story with their own experience.

THE UNWRITTEN

Rooted in the Midwest

Northwest Indiana is a place where history feels close at hand—in brick storefronts, old rail lines, courthouse squares, lake roads, and neighborhoods shaped by generations of work and change. Its towns carry the marks of industry, migration, memory, and reinvention, creating a landscape where the past is never entirely out of view.

That sense of place informs the stories I’m drawn to. I’m interested in the tensions between what a community remembers and what it leaves unsaid: the familiar street with a hidden history, the family story that shifts with each telling, and the quiet mysteries that gather around ordinary lives.

The Midwest offers both grounding and possibility. Its landscapes can feel intimate and expansive at once, rooted in local detail while opening toward larger questions of belonging, loss, resilience, and imagination. Those are the qualities I hope to carry into my work.
